Add a CommentThe book is from 1959. So it has that feeling. All in all this is a story of crazy obsession about money. What's it gonna be after the lake? The world? Kravitz is a pathetic character lost in a capitalistic way of thinking. He is not a happy camper, always grabbing at straws. and never achieving peace of mind.
The book starts out as typically appealing Canadiana, and takes a sudden and surprising turn at the end of chapter three when we find out Duddy’s father is a pimp. Is this the apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz in this 1959 novel? The answer is no, and we return to a pleasant stream of Canadian writing taught at high schools across the country.
Great book ! I've seen the movie years ago and the book is better by far ! MR is a great author and his descriptions of Montreal are very accurate.
