Add a CommentFor a TV movie, this was very well done. Colin Firth, with his steely gazes, is phenomenal (and gorgeous) as the proud, aloof Mr. Darcy. He and Jennifer Ehle, who plays Elizabeth Bennet, do a wonderful job of creating tension in the budding, if restrained, relationship between them. The scenes of the various homes and English countryside as well as costumes add to the beauty and lyricism of the film. My only complaint is in the character of the mother, Mrs. Bennet. She had a significant number of lines and midway through, her shrill screeching got very irritating. Though I enjoyed her histrionic portrayal, I found myself pressing the fast-forward or mute button whenever she was onscreen so as to avoid having to hear more of her high-pitched wails. Unfortunately, this resulted in my missing the occasional line interjected by other characters, e.g Mr. Bennet.
The best adaptation of Jane Austin's book. Period! I compare every other one to this and always come back to my favourite. Colin Firth is first and foremost Darcy to me. I even miss scenes with Mrs Bennet, not mentioning Mr Collins.
I disliked this version when it first came out, because it cut out a little too much Austen, and some of the performers go OTT. But it's very good, especially compared to the competition. As much as I love Colin Firth, I don't quite buy him as Mr. Darcy. No village maiden, no matter how dumb, could look at him and think "this is a cold and manipulative person." He looks like he's about to break into tears, half the time.
in my humble o-pin-yun hands dow the best of the best. the producer was the key. as an artist i have & and will always return to this version.
BEST MOVIE EVER!!!!
This is the very best book to screen adaptation of anything I have ever read. The producers and writers were huge Austen fans and that worked wonders with this production. I own this version now and love to show it to people who say they don't like Austen or romantic movies, just to show them how wrong they can be!
This is an exceptional production of Austen's novel. I did have one initial misgiving: Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth (the heroine). She looks like a kewpie doll come to life - like she has no underlying skeletal structure in her face. She has flawless skin but she's almost not lifelike. Both she and Susanna Harker almost ruined the film for me because of their odd look. They both give outstanding performances. Colin Firth is flawless and definitive as Mr. Darcy.
This movie is so great and it is very true to the book. Colin Firth makes the perfect Mr. Darcy and really brings the story to life. This movie is excellent and well worth the watch for any true Pride and Prejudice fans.
maybe it's just me and my aversion to hollywood, but this version of pride and prejudice is THE BEST! jane austen would have been happy with it. so true to the book and captured jane austen's humour through the characters. great cast!
The best of Jane Austin, And just as good as Jane Eyre
