Greg Mortenson has probably done more for girls education then any other person, reading the book was highly enjoyable. There are some questions on how much success greg has accomplished and there are some indications that there are more setbacks, but we are looking at a Herculean task, and no question that Greg has done more then anyone else to complete this task.

Overall, Three Cups of Tea is a small glimpse into the work done in Pakistan and Afghanistan by Greg Mortenson. However, I found the work more like a report rather than a story. There were some problems with the actual writing of the book- mixed tenses and perspective being a few. I would recommend The Young Reader's Edition of Three Cups of Tea which includes essential maps, and glosseries.

About a man who is passionate in helping children in Pakistan and Aghanistan by educating to them, as well as, women to ensure healthier lives so that the kids live long enough to attend school and learn how to read and do math, etc in a safe environment. Reading the book, I enjoyed it knowing it was a memoir of this person's life and the interesting people he meets. It was written well with inspiration and good intentions, however after reading it, I found out the controversy surrounding the author and the credibility of his story. So I am rating it 3 stars

Three Cups of Tea is the story of how one man made a difference in the lives of many through perseverance and the sheer force of his will. Greg Mortenson was a determined mountain climber who made a fundamental error when descending from a climb on K2. Having lost his way, he eventually ended up in a village whose members nursed him back to health and offered him a level of hospitality he had never before experienced. This profound incident moved Mortenson to make a vow that he would build a school for that village to ensure its future survival and prosperity. This book is a memoir of the events leading up to that first school and the many more that came after it. The work Mortenson does takes a political turn after the events of 9/11, when the eyes of the world turned upon the region of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Mortenson continued his work while trying to explain to a Western public not only what he was doing, but why it should matter to the rest of us. It is a heart-warming tale of an inexperienced fund raiser determined to make a difference.

A better and more objective writer probably would have written a better book, but I loved how Mortenson was so totally disorganised at first, and managed to achieve immense results with only sheer determination and a talent at getting people to work together for a noble goal. Having travelled to the Indian side of Baltistan, I also particularly enjoyed the rare and multi-dimentional description of this fascinating part of the world. One image particularly stood out: Mortenson says that for the cost of one Tomahawk missible (close to one million $), it's possible to build dozens of schools providing tens of thousands of kids with a proper nonextremist education over the course of a generation! "Which do you think will make us more secure?", he asks. Canada on its own could change the face of the Middle East only with the 20 billion $ that Harper wants to spend on those new jet bombers!

This is a phenomenal story of how one man's "failure" leads him on a journey that transforms the lives of thousands of villagers in Pakistan through education. I was so inspired by Greg Mortenson's story and how his passion and commitment to building schools and helping communities enabled him to overcome countless obstacles along the way. This is truly a story of how one person can make a difference in the lives of many. Greg never gave up and both he and his colleagues across the globe are an amazing example of the power of the human spirit. I would recommend this book to anybody. I couldn't put it down and am hooked into learning more about Greg and his supporters' incredible odyssey. I can't say enough good things about this book. Read it!

"Haji Ali spoke. ‘If you want to thrive in Baltistan, you must respect our ways. The first time you share tea with a Balti, you are a stranger. The second time you take tea, you are an honored guest. The third time you share a cup of tea, you become family, and for our family, we are prepared to do anything, even die. Doctor Greg, you must take time to share three cups of tea. We may be uneducated but we are not stupid. We have lived and survived here for a long time.’ "
