Add a SummaryA refreshing take on violence in literature!
Katniss Everdeen lives in poor twelfth district of the dictatorship of Panem, which has taken the place of North America. Every year, a boy and a girl, ages twelve to eighteen, from each district are sent to the Capitol to fight in The Hunger Games, in which they must survive in a randomly selected environment while trying to kill each other. It is all one live TV, a reminder of how much control the government has over the people. When Katniss's younger sister is chosen, Katniss immediately volunteers to take her place. She is almost certain she will die but ends up making unexpected alliances and faking a love story.
In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Add a CommentWhoever you are, jumikupanda, i think you're WRONG!!!!! the POINT of the hunger games is to kill people!!! GET IT?! or did you not read the book as thouringly as you thought?!
This was a book I did not enjoy. At all. It had a well-written plot for about the first 50 pages, but then it relies on violence completely to carry it through the rest of the book. I'm pretty sure what Suzanne Collins thought throughout was, "Hmm... what should I do know? Oh lets kill of a bunch of people!" Don't believe me? Read the next two book in this trilogy. Atrocious. Once you take away the absolutely random violence a horrible excuse for a book.
who doesn't want to be a heroine like Katniss?
I actually enjoyed this book, as a 40+ woman encouraged to read by young teenage daughter. I would not normally read this genre but was pleasantly surprised although I cannot whole heartedly embrace the killings part of the story. Female central character written in first person digresses now and then to tell a story from the past which I liked.
this book is amazing!! it is truly the best book i have ever read
An amazing book! Go and buy the entire series right now!
I suggest that if you want to read it you should buy it because if you placed a hold now you will have to wait for ever!!!!!!!!!! I know I did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But it was the best book in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I cant wait till the movie comes out!!!!!!!!
Admitted, I only read this because a close friend recommended it to me, it doesn't sound like the type of book and I would read, and the first few chapters had me a bit skeptical as to why it was so popular, but after the story picked up and you learn a bit more about the culture there, it really is one of those hard to put down books. It does seem rather barbaric, but it's a good book, I would recommend it!
This is the best book i have read in my life!!
