While other people say that this movie was too complicated, I had no problem with the detailed nature of the plot. The fault I saw in the movie was the acting performances by Julia Roberts and Clive Owen; both very generic and far below their standards. The movie had some nice and clever parts to it, but was not that great over all.

Many have complained that Duplicity has too complicated a storyline, that it is difficult to follow and that the plot is too complicated. As far as I'm concerned, these make it a terrific movie: Duplicity presents viewers with a challenging movie that doesn't spoon-feed them and requires them to think and concentrate rather than just sit back and passively let the story wash over them. I thought it was a smart, sharp, witty, clever film and enjoyed the performances of all of the leads.

Liked it. DUPLICITY is aptly named because the double-crosses in this movie, intentional and incidental, coupled with the double-entendres in the script, work well to convey the message that when it comes to the cut-throat business of high-stakes consumer products - corporate America is prepared to do anything and everything imaginable - evil or otherwise - to give itself an edge in the marketplace. So, Julia Roberts' and Clive Owens' characters collaborate to outwit and rip off the very people they work for (or do they work for them?) in a complicated plot that twists and turns into a series of several sub-plots that'll have you also wondering: Might they also be in love?

The film is too clever by half - going back & forth like that into their past & present lives, to arrive at some veritable truth in all these shenanigans. And the final scenes may be disappointing to those who like everything neat and sweet as far as endings go. But all-in-all, I think the movie worked for me because sometimes, as much as it sucks to say it, Devine Justice comes in many ways... including the unusually twisted denouement that greets our two anti-heroes, and we, as an audience are forced to accept as their just reward.

Skip It - Duplicity (2009) 125 min. Have you ever walked into a film half-way through and tried to catch up for the remainder of the film? Well that’s exactly what happens in this film but from the beginning. I was always in catch up mode which led to a poor movie experience. The convoluted storyline just made it extremely difficult to enjoy. The fact that Julia Roberts, Clive Owen, and Paul Giamatti starred didn’t help matters. I found no chemistry between the leads. Lots of hype, great production values, but no substance.
