The idea was interesting, and I will admit that the writing wasn't bad but I could not get around how I grew to deeply dislike the main character. She was a hypocrite but continued to paint herself as a martyr. I disliked the fact that she was attarcted to a man that had no morals and no desire to aquire them a man so weak in character that the only reason he seemed to have fallen in love with her was because she looked like his dead first wife The villain was laughable there was nothing sinister about him and something I think makes any book great is the existence of not just a great hero but a truly evil villain. Wither failed miserably on both these counts. As for her second love interest I felt sorry for him being dragged into her life and getting in trouble because of her. Nevertheless I think he was the only half likable character in the entire book. I think where Wither attempted to show power, edge, confidence, and passion it only showed the hypocricy of a teenage girl, the conditions of stockholm syndrome and a lack of true emotions.

Well Gee Whiz. This book was mediocre, the concept was unique, but looking back: Were any of the problems ACTUALLY solved? (And...) What exactly was the plot?

This book was boring. Really boring. It had potential but just didin't quite live up to it. It really felt like a first draft; with a few more changes it could have really been a great book. I hope her second one is much better. The only good thing about this book was it's cover design.

Excellent novel for it's age group. I enjoyed the setting and situation, and the characterization was fantastic. Would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed something like The Hunger Games.

Rhine is 16 years old and is going to die in 4 years. In her society, woman live to 20 and men to 25 due to a terrible virus created by and experiment-gone-wrong that happened 2 generations ago. In her world, almost everyone is under the age of 25 except for the first generation, who were born before the virus and linger at 70 years old, watching their children and grandchildren die. To combat the end of the human race, wealthy men take young girls and woman as brides. Rhine is one such bride, chosen from a group of a dozen kidnapped girls along with two others to wed 21-year-old Linden. Those who were not chosen were shot. ---See my full review here: http://throughthebookvine.blogspot.com/2011/04/wither.html

Lauren DeStefano has created a terrifying world, where at 16 a girl is considered an old maid, and no one expects to live beyond 25. Can you begin to imagine the social, economical and political repercussions of such a dramatically shorter life span that suddenly plagues what is left of the world? It’s an interesting (albeit terrifying) idea, and I’m pretty fascinated by the parts of the book that describe life outside the mansion that is essentially Rhine’s prison.
