Teen Novels - Horror & Supernatural

Annotation:Teen Book Club Selection. This is the first of a series, The Mortal Instruments. And it is fantastic! It has demons, vampires, supernatural forces, another world, conflict, love, issues, and the teens kick ass! I can't wait for the next one.

Annotation:A book club choice. It is a wondrous novel, and one I wish I had written. It tells the story of the Summer King of the fairies searching for the Summer Queen. He chooses a mortal female who does not want him (in fact, hates faireis) but wants a mortal. Instead of being HEA, and full of romantic angst, it gives an option of choice, and female autonomy.

Annotation:This is excellent! A werewolf story that is so much more. Vivian is a born werewolf, along with her family. She falls in love with a human boy and is rejected after she changes in front of him (although he sought magic). Rage ensues and she begins to do stupid things, suspecting she might be on a killing spree. Someone is. It is powerfully written and Krause is consistent with the language, inserting wildness and canine images throughout.

Annotation:This book has the flavour of an historical novella mixed with a supernatural tale. Pemba moves from the big city and discovers the ghost of a slave girl in her new house. With the help of a local black amateur historian (based on real events), she uncovers the story of the ghost, and learns to connect to her new home. The story of her struggle to accept her move is weak, but the historical tale is fine.

Annotation:Bk 1 of Darkest Powers. It starts slow and is confusing. I am not as taken with it as the teens in the book club, but they like it and that is important. Chloe has powers; she's a necromancer, and so do all the other kids in the group home. There is betrayal (all the Lyle House employees and her aunt), and the kids take control. Cliffhanger ending means that the next one will be read by everyone who has read this one.

Annotation:It is very plot-driven and explains too much. I don't know why I continued to read it to the end, except it felt like a train wreck. This is how not to write a novel.

Annotation:2008 next top novel finalist...Great stories, some inspired by famous writers like Poe. Spooky, spinechilling.
