EPL Picks - Best of 2011 - Musicus Eclectosaurus

Annotation:Just great Canadian indie pop.

Annotation:Post-post-rock, thankfully, and all the stronger for it. Musically all over the map, but with that core of moody restlessness that's been a constant throughout their career.

Annotation:Glorious noise...

Annotation:I'd not listened to Martinu before this, and now I'm kicking myself. This neo-classical composer wrote six incredibly engaging symphonies, collected here, and if you've never been a fan of 20th century classical music this just might open your ears.

Annotation:Yay! Gang of Four return in blistering fashion. Time has not blunted their wit and wisdom. Occupy everything.

Annotation:Totally unique Canadian klezmer music. Corruscating political and social commentaries. Why EPL doesn't have it, I don't know. You should suggest that we buy it. It would be better coming from you!

Annotation:People always go on about Andy Palacio and the inspiration that he was to Garifuna music and the world music community in general. I never quite got it, myself. But after hearing Aurelio and Laru Beya I think I get it! This was the most infectious release that I heard in 2011, although Transglobal Underground, Locarno, and Little Axe (to name a few) also came out with some very strong international stuff this year.

Annotation:Ms. Welch has turned in some pretty dour recordings over the years but this one is quite a revelation. Dark, introspective country and folk songwriting that knows no peer.

Annotation:Beautiful beats and an unmissable message, rarely have the two been wedded so well.

Annotation:Strange, strange saxophone pieces from this member of Arcade Fire. Some are quite short, but none are anything less than riveting. Guest vocals from Laurie Anderson and Shara Worden only seal the deal. Nominally "jazz" but this is one of those rare recordings that actually transcends genre.

Annotation:Brilliant, skewed pop pieces signal a real return to form for this former Pavement singer and guitarist.

Annotation:EPL doesn't have this one because we don't buy vinyl anymore. But you do, so go out and buy this one from local heroes, The Famines. It's absolutely essential. (LP comes with a digital download, hence covering all the bases.)
