Past and Present

Annotation:An utterly captivating and moving novel about a tragic and horrific part of history. A beautiful yet heartbreaking story.

Annotation:In the present day, Julia is given an embroidery book and diary of a young girl kidnapped in 1625 in Cornwall and taken to Morocco as a slave. As Julia reads Catherine's story, she discovers that their lives are intertwined, and that her own life will be changed by the encounter. Combining history, romance, art, tragedy and a hint of the supernatural, this is a great novel.

Annotation:A strange story in some ways, but very engrossing. Thirteen year old Briony, in a moment of selfishness and impetousness, ruins the lives of her sister and her sister's love. Can she ever find atonement for her crime?

Annotation:I feel bad for Lawrence Hill in a way- while this is an excellent book, it just can't compare to his masterpiece, The Book of Negroes. That aside, this is an excellent read. I enjoyed the story of 5 generations of Langston Cranes and their battle with slavery and racism.

Annotation:A father takes his young son into the cemetery of lost books. He is told that he may choose one book, but that he must protect it with his life. Little does young Daniel know that the book will indeed thrust him into danger and intrigue. Upon investigation, Daniel learns that most of the author's works have been destroyed, and an enigmatic figure shows up looking for his book. As Daniel tries to put the mystery together, he learns the heart-breaking story of the author's life. Set in fascist Spain, this is a stunning read.

Annotation:The story of two sisters, as told through the memories of the young maid who witnessed their tragic lives.

Annotation:Morton beautifully weaves this story, seamlessly blending history and fairy tale together, and telling a story across several generations. I was captivated and absorbed by this book and deeply invested in the fate of each heroine. An exquisite story- deeply moving, acutely tragic and yet profoundly uplifting and hopeful.
