The Long Goodbye
The Long Goodbye (DVD - 2002)

Annotation:Elliott Gould's Marlowe is a bit too 1970s for my taste, but this is an important Chandler film and worth seeing.

The Case of the Fugitive Nurse
The Case of the Fugitive Nurse By Gardner, Erle Stanley (Book - 1993)

Annotation:Mason is based on Gardner's own real experiences in his "Court of Last Resort," which offered one last defence to the I-swear-I'm-innocent.

The Moving Target
The Black Dahlia
The Black Dahlia By Ellroy, James (Book - 1998)
Murder by Death
Murder by Death (DVD - 2001)

Annotation:A spoof on all our detective favorites. Read every book on this list before you see this movie. It will be way funnier thta way.

The Thin Man
The Thin Man By Hammett, Dashiell (Book - 1992)

Annotation:Nick and Nora Charles. Quick-witted, urbane, and always a little tight.

The Black Lizard Big Book of Black Mask Stories

Annotation:Black Lizard is a great publisher of crime noir. Check out this list of authors and titles.

The Colorado Kid
The Colorado Kid By King, Stephen (Book - 2005)
The Literature of Crime
The Literature of Crime Stories by World-famous Authors By Queen, Ellery (Book - 1950)
The Maltese Falcon
The Maltese Falcon (DVD - 2006)
The Maltese Falcon
The Godwulf Manuscript
The Godwulf Manuscript By Parker, Robert B. (Book - 1973)

Annotation:This is the first Spenser novel, and truly amodern-ish staple of the genre. Read this, and then cry a little because Parker passed on and we all still miss him.

The Mike Hammer Collection
The Big Sleep
The Big Sleep By Chandler, Raymond (Book - 1992)
The Big Sleep
The Big Sleep (DVD - 2000)

Annotation:Bogart is the best Marlowe.

The Killer inside Me
The Killer inside Me By Thompson, Jim (Book - 1991)

Annotation:This is truely a crime novel. No heros, no clever detectives. Only an elegant, raw brutality.

Description

It was raining outside when she pushed into my office. "What'd ya need?" I growled, looking up from underneath my hat. Yeah, I wear it indoors. Talk to my mother if you don't like it. She fluttered her lashes, "I need a favor. Tommy told me to see you. Said you was the best." I pulled a ratty paperback from my desk drawer, tossed it across the table. "Here you go, Darling. Don't blame me if it keeps you up at night."
