JoCoLibrary - Five Rock Films Actually Worth Seeing

5 items

The Kids Are Alright
The Kids Are Alright (DVD - 2003)

Annotation:Quite possibly the best documentary on the subject of rock 'n' roll ever made -- partly because the subject matter is so compelling: The Who -- four English lads who could really flay a song -- and fight each other tooth and nail to make their opinions heard. In the end, it's the music, though, and the band's sense of humor, that carries the day.

This Is Spinal Tap
This Is Spinal Tap A Rockumentary by Martin Di Bergi (DVD - 2000)

Annotation:The fact that some people thought this "mockumentary" was/is real just makes it all the funnier. And remember: When buying amplifiers, always make sure the volume knob goes to eleven, not ten.

Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin (DVD - 2003)

Annotation:Beats "The Song Remains the Same" film any day. That movie featured some atypically uninspired Zep performances, plus some "fantasy sequences" that were pretty lame. This newer DVD features Zep at its best, and it'll wallop the hell out of your subwoofer.

Almost Famous
Almost Famous (DVD - 2001)

Annotation:Cameron Crowe's affectionate but unvarnished nod to his youth as a prodigious writer for "Rolling Stone" magazine blends humor, pathos, romance and sweetness to create an aching, accurate depiction of adolescence.

Gimme Shelter
Gimme Shelter (DVD - 2000)

Annotation:Powerful chronicle of the disastrous 1969 concert at California's Altamont Speedway that featured the Stones, Jefferson Airplane, Santana -- and "security" provided by the Hell's Angels.
