EPL Picks - Best of 2011 - Picture Books

Annotation:The death of his beloved pet Ella is hard on Gus, but she promised him that she would always be near him - and a promise made under a full moon cannot be broken. Caldecott winner Eric Rohmann has created a book that is sad, funny, spooky, and full of heart.

Annotation:Here come some more loveable characters from Mo Willems. Amanda and her alligator love surprises, books, and each other! These 6 ½ stories are great for reading together or for new readers to try reading on their own.

Annotation:A bear's hat is missing, and he wants it back. No one says that they've seen it...but is someone lying? In his authorial debut, Jon Klassen has created a sly picture book that rewards readers with an eye for detail and a strong imagination.

Annotation:There are many different kinds of louds: good louds, bad louds, fun louds, sad louds. This lovely follow-up to 2010's The Quiet Book celebrates all of the loud noises that a child might hear in a day.

Annotation:Jane Goodall wasn't always a world-renowned zoologist; she started out as a young girl who liked to learn about animals. This gentle biography isn't as detailed as Jeanette Winterson's The Watcher (also published this year), but the illustrations and the tone make for a transformative reading experience.

Annotation:Fifty of today's best cartoonists join forces to present fifty nursery rhymes, each one told in a unique style. Some are quite traditional while others are anything but! A great read for the young and the young at heart.

Annotation:Caldecott-winning Chris Van Allsburg's first book in five years is about Annie Edson Taylor, a 62-year-old woman who went over Niagara Falls in a wooden barrel. Van Allsburg's style is perfectly matched to the subject matter, and the final result is a picture book that celebrates Taylor's courage and spirit.

Annotation:It's hard for a square cat to fit in to a round world. Eula's friends try to help her feel better about her shape, but nothing seems to work! Square Cat has lots of bright colours, visual jokes and a positive message about friendship.

Annotation:A walrus has escaped from the zoo! It can't be too hard to find a walrus in a city...can it? The clever illustrations will have children excitedly pointing out the walrus in each scene, but even once they've found the walrus, this wordless story is one that they can return to over and over again.

Annotation:Lucy is determined to make a friend today - whether anyone wants to be her friend or not! Lucy, who first appeared in Peter Brown's Children Make Terrible Pets, has so much personality that she almost jumps off the page. The illustrations are bright and detailed and even at her most forceful, you never stop rooting for Lucy to find the friend that she wants so badly.
