B's Comedies, Musicals & other Fun

Annotation:Forgotten classic: charming coming-of-age story from the 80's about a group Indianan friends having to decide what comes next after High School

Annotation:Brilliant satire: Faux documentary about heavy metal band on tour that finds the schisms between self-perception and reality.

Annotation:For me, the funniest movie of the last 20 years or so, but more than some items on my list, a film that will divide people: either it'll hit your sweet spot or amaze you that anyone thinks its funny. ---A highly stylized comedy where a geeky teenager does his best to make lemonade of all the lemons life throws at him.

Annotation:The absolute best way to experience the bizarre choreographic genius of Busby Berkeley is to skip all the parts in between the dancing, and this compilation does just that.

Annotation:The joys and sorrows of adolescence, hilarious and painful, one of the greatest TV series ever.

Annotation:Best filmed production of George Bernard Shaw I know of - Wendy Howard is wonderful and Leslie Howard is a fantastic comic actor - which may be a surprise for those who know him mostly as annoyingly drippy "Ashley" in Gone with the Wind"

Annotation:The Marx Brothers at their anarchic best - before they started making movies for MGM who toned down their ribald humor somewhat.

Annotation:The youngest child in a functional disfunctional family dreams of winning the "Little Miss Sunshine" beauty pageant and her family gets behind her even though the odds are not in her favor. ---Ingenious twists and turns, you never know what's going to happen next.

Annotation:An enchanting dream vision of New York City in the early 1940s about a village of benevolent bugs trying to avoid the evil machinations of Mr. Beetle, a conniving real estate developer (even in the 40's, housing problems in Manhattan are so endemic even the bugs have a hard time catching a break!). ---Beautiful background paintings and some evocative songs by Hoagy Carmichael and Frank Loesser !

Annotation:The best written of the Astaire/Rogers musicals and therefore the most fun. --The standout musical number for me is "Pick Yourself up", but the film is filled with great numbers. ---Unfortunately there is a tribute to great black tappers which I guess I'd say is unintentionally racist, but what are you going to do?

Annotation:No movie has ever made me laugh more than this one.

Annotation:My specific recommendation here is really "A Dog's Life" on disc one. Most Chaplin films have melancholy undertones but this one if pure fun. ---For what its worth, "Soldier at Arms is both funny and a surprisingly accurate-seeming depiction of trench warfare in WWI.

Annotation:Two comedic giants of the 1930's, Jean Harlowe and Lee Tracy team up as a cynical publicity agent and the ditzy movie star he represents. ---My vote for best screwball comedy, and it just may be me, but Harlowe and Tracy have a strange but powerful chemistry together - you get the feeling that he REALLY loves her without his realizing it.

WARNING: Senses of humor may vary....but these are films that make me laugh and/or cheer me up (If you can tell I am struggling not to use the over-used term 'feel-good' movie you are right).
