July: Oh Canada. In 2016, beloved Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip announced that their lead singer, Gord Downie, had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, and had little time to live. Despite undergoing weeks of surgery and chemotherapy, Downie joined his band for one final tour across Canada that summer, asking filmmakers Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier (Manufactured Landscapes) to document the tour for a film. The final concert, in the band’s hometown of Kingston, Ontario, was broadcast for free across CBC platforms, where an estimated 11.7 million people tuned in, nearly a third of all Canadians. Downie passed away on October 17, 2017.
