Otehiwin // Open Heart: Art Exhibition

All Day
Stanley A. Milner (Downtown)

Description

Join Alberta's Artist in Residence Sharon Rose Kootenay, and host/musician Colten Bear at the Stanley A. Milner Library, as they welcome a week-long program of Indigenous Musicians, Artists, and Storytellers, along with Family Friends, and Special Guests!

Created for the 2023 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Otehiwin // Open Heart exhibition presents 13 dioramas that illustrate the Indian Residential School era, the time before, and the time after.

With scenes comprised of handmade dolls, structures, dwellings, and landscapes, this exhibition explores the history and legacy of the Indian Residential Schools, and the impact it had upon First Nations and Metis families.  Guided through narrative panels, visitors will be presented with stories, and memories of family life, and come away with a greater understanding of the loss, resilience, and reclamation of Indigenous Identities.

Otehiwin // Open House is presented by the Aboriginal Arts Council of Alberta.
