On the Edge: Emerging Scholars is a speaker series featuring cutting edge research presented by emerging scholars and researchers from Edmonton's academic community. Presented in partnership with the University of Alberta's Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research.
Presenter Name: Ishani DasGupta
Presenter Biography:
Ishani is a Computing Science Ph.D. student at the University of Alberta, specializing in medical image analysis and machine learning. Her research leverages neural networks to automate left ventricular (LV) segmentation from ultrasound images of the heart. Beyond medical imaging, she is interested in data analytics and microfluidics.
TOPIC: Can AI Listen to Your Heart?
Cardiovascular disease is the second leading cause of death in Canada. Patients with cardiac symptoms are scanned by echocardiography, a non-invasive, non-ionizing, cost-effective, and portable medical imaging modality that uses ultrasound (US) waves to evaluate heart performance. Diagnosing cardiac diseases involves analyzing the left ventricle (LV); this requires doctors and clinicians to identify the chamber manually from echocardiography (echo) scans - a tedious, time-consuming process.
My research uses machine learning approaches, specifically neural networks, for image segmentation and automatic identification of the LV chamber. With this method, I aim to eliminate the need for manual input from experts, significantly reducing patient wait times and improving overall care.
