TOPIC: Understanding Methane Emissions: Insights from Satellite Data and AI

TALK DESCRIPTION:
Methane is a greenhouse gas that is more powerful than carbon dioxide and therefore must be addressed to fight climate change. Countries around the world, including Canada, are setting targets to cut methane emissions, particularly from oil and gas operations, by 2030 and beyond. But here is the catch: accurately tracking methane emissions is not trivial! It requires utilizing various monitoring methods to obtain a comprehensive understanding. In this talk, let us look at some existing technologies being used and discover how recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) can transform how we measure and manage these emissions!

BIOGRAPHY:

Dr. Juliana Leung is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta, where she holds the position of Canada Research Chair in Data Analytics in Subsurface Flow Processes. She is also a registered professional engineer in Alberta. Dr. Leung specializes in numerical modelling and applying AI to study and design flow processes in subsurface rock formations. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Calgary and holds both a Master of Science and a Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.
