Conversations with the Department of Neuroscience: Sleep, Dreams and the Brain

7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Description

Sleep does more than recharge our minds - it may hold the key to detecting brain disease early. In this talk, Dr. Steve Joza explores how changes in sleep and dreaming offer some of the earliest clues to conditions like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, and how this growing science could help protect our brains for the future.

Dr. Joza is a clinician-scientist with expertise in movement disorders and sleep neurology. He joined the Parkinson and Movement Disorders Program and the Sleep Medicine Program at the University of Alberta in 2024 and is currently assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Neurology. His research interests focus upon the prodromal stages of Parkinson’s disease, including the progression of clinical and neuroimaging markers in REM sleep behavior disorder. His work has recently been honored by the Sleep Medicine Investigator Award from the American Academy of Neurology, and MDS Junior Award from the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

Please note that the purpose of this presentation is to provide general information and current research findings. Doctors cannot comment on or answer questions about individual cases or concerns.
