Beaded Brooch/Fascinator Hat (Advanced Beadwork – Group 1)
This workshop will be taught over three classes:
Tues. Mar. 10 (5:00 – 6:00); Wed. Mar. 11 (5:00 – 6:00); Fri. Mar. 13 (5:00 – 6:00)
“Wapikwaniy//Flower” is an artistic exploration into the social, emotional, and spiritual worldviews of Indigenous women, as guided through cultural knowledge and practices, fine-craft instruction and shared conversation.
Open to adults, the “Wapikwaniy//Flower” workshops are intended to bring participants together to learn traditional women’s teachings and fine-craft mentorship through storied objects; to design/create floral beadwork; and to sew a selection of significant cultural objects.
Hosted at the Milner’s “Piyesiw Waskahikan,” Wapikwaniy//Flower will be delivered through pre-registered enrollment, and open to six participants per workshop. As designed, the fine-craft workshops will incrementally expand skills and introduce a variety of techniques, from Introductory, to Intermediate, and through to Advanced registrations.
Participants who have completed an Intermediary workshop can register for the Advanced project workshops. Please email Hugh.Lowry@epl.ca for any clarification.

Facilitated by accomplished Indigenous artists, and the founding members of Four Lodges, Sharon Rose Kootenay and Penelope Moon-Walker will provide expert instruction, cultural transmission, and a supportive and inclusive setting.
The artist-facilitators will have beadwork samples in different stages of completion, to clearly show the learners how their projects will progress.
Sharon and Penny will showcase personal beadwork, and beadwork from the Four Lodges collection, as a teaching resource; and to open a discussion on how the historical Metis women of Fort Edmonton inspired the collection, and how creating meaningful legacy artwork supports heritage-craft practices. In addition, Sharon and Penny will demonstrate and teach colour theory, sewing construction, and finishing techniques.
The project will provide tools and supplies during the workshops, and participants will receive a wide selection of seed-beads, fabrics, deer hide, and embellishments to complete a variety of projects.
