Lyric Writing: Let's Chat Techniques and Approach

6:00 PM – 7:30 PM

Description

What makes a lyric work? Must it move you emotionally? Must it feel authentic? Must it say something new? There are many reasons we set out to write, and many ways to gauge whether what we're doing is working.

Join us! We'll chat about cultivating a fulfilling writing practice and getting out of the way to let the process surprise us. We'll also share techniques for gathering, generating, organizing, and composing with our material.

This is an online program. To receive a link and passcode to the online class, please register with your name and email address and instructions will be sent to you within 24 hours of the session.

Zoom, a third-party app, will be used for this virtual session. By joining, you acknowledge that EPL does not take responsibility for Zoom's privacy policies and practices.

Featured Musician Bio:
My name is Tom (Saint Idiot), and I'm an avant pop musician, producer/mixer, and writer. I studied English literature, music, and creative writing at the University of Alberta. In 2017 I received the Cécile E. Mactaggart Travel Award for Narrative Writing, with which I travelled to Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, all the while gathering a massive trove of prose. In 2022, I resolved to write a set of lyrics every morning, reaching a 142 day streak! I'm also in the first stages of writing Saint Idiot's sixth studio release right now—needless to say, I've thought a lot about writing and what makes lyric writing uniquely compelling. I'll share some of my ideas, show you my practice, and then we'll put our heads together and make sure everyone leaves with something new to try.
