Tales of love, loss, and betrayal are at the heart of When It Happens to You, the debut story collection from actress and author Molly Ringwald.

A Hollywood icon, Ringwald defined the teenage experience in the eighties in such classic films as Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club, and Sixteen Candles. Now the star of ABC Family's hit series, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and author of the bestselling memoir Getting the Pretty Back, Ringwald brings that same compelling candor she displayed in her film roles to the unforgettable characters she has created in this series of linked stories about the particular challenges, joys, and disappointments of adult relationships.

Here are stories that grapple with infertility and infidelity, fame and familial discord, in a magnificent collection that will resonate broadly with readers--from fans of Melissa Banks to Meg Wolitzer to Lorrie Moore.

I shouldn't have been so surprised at how much I enjoyed this book written by an actor famous as a very young woman. I listened to the audiobook read by the author. I loved how the stories intertwined and offered a balanced viewpoint on the same situations. I felt sympathy for both sides of the infidelity shemozzle. (Not equally though.)

Each of these short stories appears complete, but collectively, they provide a much bigger picture. Characters are woven through numerous scenarios, sometimes the focus of the story, other times in a minor role. Ringwald writes about situations such as infertility and infidelity in a raw, realistic manner, that is not sanitized and romanticized, so it is easy for the reader to relate.

A surprisingly good collection of interconnected stories from actress Molly Ringwald. "My Olivia" and "When It Happens to You" were especially stellar.

As many of my fellow reviewers did, I too first judged this book by the author, Molly Ringwald, an actress who found her stardom in the 80's. When picked for my book club I thought, how good could this possibly be? I admit I was terribly wrong! It was a terrifically captivating book. The way she wrote it as a novella in short stories all intermingling really added to the genius of the work. The book starts with the marriage of Greta & Phillip which soon falls apart. Each subsequent story interconnects with the first in some fashion continuing to follow the lives, loves, hopes and shattered dreams of Greta & Phillip. Written in beautiful prose, I would highly recommend this book to other readers, especially those skeptical of Molly Ringwald's talents as a writer.

These eight interlinkied stories are set in Los Angeles and are about relationships, mostly around the theme of infidelity. There were some low points in terms of the writing, but it was quite readable overall even if there were no great insights.

Wow! Molly Ringwald can really write. I love Ringwald in all of her 80's movies, so I decided to give this book a whirl. The book consists of loosely connected short stories that are quite engaging. Each chapter focuses on a different character. I really enjoyed the way the characters were developed through this fractured story telling.

I spotted this book on our new fiction shelf at work a few weeks ago, but got delayed on reading it until now. At the time, I said "Molly Ringwald wrote a novel?" and picked it up. I have always liked her as an actor and was intrigued, wanting to see what kind of writer she was. Well, the answer is a good one. I really enjoyed this book. It is told from several different points of view, from a variety of people who interact with each other throughout.
It is about marriage, love, fidelity, identity and being human. No one here is perfect, and we see the interactions between wives and husbands, lovers, parents and children (both grown and young) and friends. We see the results of infidelity, loss, and good intentions gone wrong. We see what happens when wanting what is best for someone isn't always helpful. We see what happens when there is not enough honesty, and when there is too much. We see love in all its forms.
Highly enjoyable.

I couldn't get into it. Right at the beginning I got turned off by a woman giving herself hormone injections. {{{shudder}}}

Several short interconnected stories. The writing was believable, not sure I agreed with the ending but that is just a personal thing, nothing to do with the writing or story.

Same basic plot as a lot of other books I've read. I liked the way the author tied several short stories together into one big story; very unique. Would have liked to see a more definitive ending though.

The moment you make someone promise anything is the same moment you ask them to lie to you.
