Wow! We just watched the magnificent classic The Last Command from this superb collection of three silent films by the director Josef von Sternberg. Best known for his six movies with Marlene Dietrich, von Sternberg shows that he already was a master film-maker with a unique style. The film stars the great actor Emil Jannings (later to appear in von Sternberg's The Blue Angel) as a former top general in the czar's army during the Russian Revolution, who has been broken and reduced to taking low-paying jobs as an extra in Hollywood movies. Jannings won the first Academy Award for best actor for this movie, and richly deserved it. His performance is commanding, mesmerizing and ultimately shattering. The film has many brilliant close-ups, rousing crowd scenes and in its last scene takes you onto a Hollywood sound stage, with wonderful William Powell as the director. Don't be put off because this is a silent film--just give yourself up to the stunning visuals and intense emotions. You won't regret it.
