Nick and her cousin, Helena, grew up sharing sultry summers on Martha's Vineyard in a glorious old family estate called Tiger House. Following World War II, Helena goes off to Hollywood and a new marriage while Nick reunites with a young husband home from war. Back at Tiger House with their children on the brink of the 1960s, the cousins try to recapture that sense of possibility -- but the intrusion of violence causes everything to unravel.

This book had a promising start--great characters and details--but it kinda fizzled and the ending was contrived and disappointing. Still worthing reading, though.

I agree with Sunflower19. I really enjoyed this book, right up until the ending!

It was such a well-told story until the end....where it seemed to fizzle out in a disappointing way.

This book is definitely a cut above stories about love, betrayal and relationships, with a mystery thrown into the mix. I enjoyed it.

And a double shot of Patricia Highsmith mixed in the eloquent prose...

I was so excited to read this book. I loved everything about it except the ending. I thought it ended too quickly, like she didn't know how to end, so she just stopped.
The beginning and middle, the flashbacks were done beautifully. I really felt like I was there...I didn't want the story to end!

There's more than a tip of the hat to F. Scott Fitzgerald in this wonderfully wrought tale of glamour, privilege, boredom, resentments and martinis set in Martha's Vineyard, post WWII. Cousins Nick (this time a woman) and Helene, both lovely in very different ways, are devoted. They live together while waiting for Nick's husband to return from war, and Helene's plans to remarry and move to Hollywood. Their lives couldn't be different--Nick lounging around the kitchen in her swimsuit, simmering from the repression of her affluent, housewifely life while Helene floats through her odd existence in an opium cloud. Their children Daisy and Ed discover a dead body in the beach house and the secrets begin to wash to shore.

Fantastic!!!!
