Meh! Star Trek is less about space then about contemporary politics on earth as well as about friendship, and "the sacrifice of one for the many". Some of the early tv episodes felt and looked like high school plays. There was more philosophy than violence. In fact, the Star Trek team preferred to "set your phasers on stun". Star Wars continued with the nod to philosophy, but upped the ante on violence and special effects.
The first film in this set - the Wrath of Khan - was remade in 2013, and is OK. The follow-up "Search for Spock" is a bit of a stinker, as 'these guys really can't act' is painfully clear. The last film, :The Voyage Home" is a hoot, and is reason enough to watch all three films, just to understand the lead-up to this film.
Yes, there were better series, but Star Trek proved that sci-fi films could be enjoyed by more than scifi geeks.
