Tells the story behind Highclere Castle, the real-life inspiration and setting for Julian Fellowes's Emmy Award-winning PBS show, and the life of one of its most famous inhabitants, Lady Almina, the 5th Countess of Carnarvon. Lady Almina was the daughter of a wealthy industrialist, Alfred de Rothschild, who married his daughter off at a young age, her dowry serving as a crucial link in the effort to preserve the Earl of Carnarvon's ancestral home. Throwing open the doors of Highclere Castle to tend to the wounded of World War I, Lady Almina distinguished herself as a brave and remarkable woman.

This is the true story on which the hit TV series DOWNTON ABBEY was based on. If you are a big fan of the TV show, I would wager that you will enjoy this book. The book focuses on the life of Lady Almina Herbert, the wife of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, George Herbert. Upon her marriage, she became the lady of the well-known Highclere Castle in Hampshire. It follows her adjustment into her new role as lady of the castle, her work as a nurse during WWI, her interaction with the house staff, the birth & upbringing of her 2 children, her trips with her ailing husband to Egypt each winter, & her eventual moving on after the untimely death of her husband. If you followed DOWNTON ABBEY, you will notice the points on which the TV show followed the true story closely. I enjoyed getting to know who I believe is the parallel to "Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess" whom I found equally as fascinating as the TV character.
