From start to finish, this is nearly all battle. If it was a football game, it was called a "barn burner". If it was an old western, it was called a "shoot 'em up". It is nearly non-stop super weapons, super punches, and super spells for a DC supernatural team. If your looking for all-action, this delivers. In my personal preferences, I like when Jack Kirby's Demon continues to rhyme, as he does here. However, Madame Xanadu is one of my favorite characters (I like obscure magic users), and her representation here really could have been anyone. There were few of her characteristics from her title. She and the Demon becoming a couple was interesting, but did she have to lose all her character?? Also, I prefer team books with little identity portraits somewhere. Just the same, I will read Volume 2.

One of the better offerings from the New 52 reboot. Paul Cornell, who wrote Captain Britain and MI13 for Marvel before this, takes a group of characters and puts them in medieval times. I was familiar with the Demon and Vandal Savage, less so with a previous version of the Shining Knight, and not at all familiar with other characters, who may or may not be new. Cornell takes this unlikely grouping, refashions them for an old time, and pits them all against a dark threat in the Dark Ages. He's ideally paired with a good artist who captures the gritty energy and bloodlust of the times.
