what should've been a story about the purported "criminal conversation" of Caroline Sheridan Norton, an adulterous affair with Lord Melbourne, for a time the Prime Minister of England, and the changes she was able to bring about around the legal status of women, we get the mundane details of the otherwise not especially unusual life of a not especially interesting woman, not especially either well told
