As I got a short ways into this audiobook I realized I had given up on it a few years ago. The beginning is slow. But now I realize why it's worth the patience.

Ms Qindlen sets the tone of the mom and her family with such ordinary closeness. So as they suffer their tragedy, it stunned me as if I knew the family; as if they lived down the street, and their kids played in my yard.

Everyone grieves in their own way. This is a story of profound loss. It takes patience and grace to come back. Something the reader experiences as well.

Well-written and interesting. I found it slow at first, and didn't like the reader at the beginning because she sounded sort of irritated and flat. But I either got used to her, or her tone better suited events later in the book. You could see the bad events coming, which is guess is how writers set things up.

There is wisdom and kindness in the aftermath, and I liked that. I think it's a realistic portrayal of a grounded person's response to terrible events.

Heartbreaking and emotional story of a family destroyed by tragedy. It will break your heart. Even so, I'm glad I read it.
