Growing up in the rural southern hamlet of Natchez, Mississippi, Penn Cage learned everything he knows about honor and duty from his father, Tom Cage. But now the beloved family doctor and pillar of the community is accused of murdering Viola Turner, the beautiful nurse with whom he worked in the dark days of the early 1960s. A fighter who has always stood for justice, Penn is determined to save his father, even though Tom, stubbornly evoking doctor-patient privilege, refuses to speak up.

I enjoy listening to downloaded audio novels. Natchez burning is a good story, but the man reading is not pleasant to listen to. His reading style doesn't flow. Inflection of voice is important but not comfortable. Isles other readers of audio books in this series is good, but not this man. Sorry

I listened to the audio book. At the beginning, I was a little apprehensive since it was 30 discs; however, the story moved along well.

Nov 16 2016....well, I tried to sneak in this fiction book and gave it to my hubby to listen too. Maybe, if it hadn't been so scratched, he might have gotten through it, but he loves his non-fiction, and he wasn't fooled. He didn't finish it, and sent it back as soon as he had something else to listen to. (Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt....he's really enjoying that one!)

Years ago I liked Iles books, now I find them boring to the point that I didn't finish & truly disliked the reader. No way I could get through 90+ chapters.

Fantastic story linking the past and present in the deep South. Racial tensions and work of the KKK still color daily lives, and many are bound by the sins and heartaches of 40 years ago.
First-rate writing. The plot wobbles just a bit by the book's end.
I listened to the audio. 30 discs!! Great narrator.
Highly recommended.
