Jackie "Moms" Mabley was an African-American stand-up comic and showbiz pioneer who emerged from the Chitlin' Circuit of African-American Vaudeville to become a mainstream star on the stage and TV. Mabley pushed the boundaries of comedy by tackling topics such as gender, sex, and racism, making her one of the first taboo-pushing comedians on the comedy circuit. Once billed as "The Funniest Woman in the World", she performed up until her death in 1975. Whoopi Goldberg directs and appears.

Celebrate Women’s History Month!
Jackie Moms Mabley was a phenomenal performer; this documentary includes archival video and recent interviews from famous comedian-admirers. Joan Rivers said Moms stand up told the truth and she was funny. She inspired many, many people with her message: “You got a mouth! Speak Out and Speak Up”.

best stand up that ever lived

Thank you Whoopie Goldberg for this entertaining and heartfelt tribute to a fascinating person and performer. Moms lived and worked and told it like it was through the depression, segregation, the Civil Rights struggle AND the so called sexual revolution. Someone said of Moms that she just told the truth - so we could see that it was funny. So true.

Great movie about a great person who lived an extraordinary life. It was fun to learn how Moms inspired all of the different comedians and entertainers that they interviewed and how she impacted the way we think and talk about race and oppression. I recommend this to anyone interested in civil rights, social justice, or the history of stand-up.
