When the Iraq war began, conservationist Lawrence Anthony could think of only one thing: the fate of the Baghdad Zoo, caught in the crossfire at the heart of the city. Once Anthony entered Iraq he discovered that hostilities and uncontrolled looting had devastated the zoo and its animals. Working with members of the zoo staff and a few compassionate U.S. soldiers, he defended the zoo, bartered for food on war-torn streets, and scoured bombed palaces for desperately needed supplies. Babylon's Ark chronicles Anthony's hair-raising efforts to save a pride of Saddam's lions, close a deplorable black-market zoo, run ostriches through shoot-to-kill checkpoints, and rescue the dictator's personal herd of Thoroughbred Arabian horses.
A tale of the selfless courage and humanity of a few men and women living dangerously for all the right reasons, Babylon's Ark is an inspiring and uplifting true-life adventure of individuals on both sides working together for the sake of magni'cent wildlife caught in a war zone.

I read "Elephant Whisperer" and became hooked with his writing. I know he tends to repeat himself but it helps refresh my memory as incidents involve a country where unfamiliar names and locations can become convoluted. The challenges and tenacity that Lawrence exhibits is extraordinary and put me on the edge of my seat. As a wildlife advocate I wholly suggest this read. Lawrence is on the top of my list as someone who put his sweat and tears into saving wildlife. Accompanying this read I would suggest Daphne Sheldrick's book.

It is a wonderful story about a little known zoo. When we think about wars, zoos are the last thing we think about. This title makes you feel that you are following along with Lawerence and the zoo staff as it seems it is a race against time to help these animals regain mental and physical health. If you love animals and or zoos or both, this is a must read.

Lawrence Anthony is an amazing human being and it is so sad the world lost him earlier this year. This was an inspiring and heart-breaking book but one that reinforces the good and caring in people.
