I'm not an opera buff, but I know what I like--and kinda like. This movie version of the opera based on Thomas Mann's novella "Death In Venice" is certainly "astringent" as mentioned on wikipedia, but it has a few moments. The singer playing Aschenbach brings solid acting skills to the role. The sets never really place one in Venice, but they are imaginatively minimalist, neutral, and provide a requisite tragic surrealness. The silent dancer who plays Tadzio nicely provides the youthful beauty and grace with which Aschenbach becomes so obsessed. The singer who plays Apollo is wonderful. However, overall it's not for the opera initiate.
