The extraordinary world introduced in Paul Pope's Battling Boy is rife with monsters and short on heroes... but in this action-driven extension of the Battling Boy universe, we see it through a new pair of eyes: Aurora West, daughter of Arcopolis's last great hero, Haggard West.

A prequel to Battling Boy , The Rise of Aurora West follows the young hero as she seeks to uncover the mystery of her mother's death, and to find her place in a world overrun with supernatural monsters and all-too-human corruption. With a taut, fast-paced script from Paul Pope and JT Petty and gorgeous, kinetic art from David Rubin, The Rise of Aurora West (the first of two volumes) is a tour de force in comics storytelling.

Monster-hunter-in-training Aurora accompanies her father, the science hero Haggard West, as he hunts down the monsters that plague their city. Together, they stop these creatures from snatching children away, simple enough, and yet something new is afoot. The monsters are stealing parts to assemble a machine. For what reason we still don't know, but Aurora figures that these current events and a mysterious symbol have something to do with the discovery her family made in Egypt, and possibly even her mother's unsolved murder. A day in the life of this determined young lady is a high-octane mixture of adventure, mystery, and trials. Something which the panel design often reflects in its angled or experimental forms. Considering this, the use black and white seems an odd choice; colour would have worked very well for this title, however that is not to say that the shading was done poorly, for it does have a dramatic effect in moments of family bonding. The first volume of two, The Rise of Aurora West is a very quick read, but quite good.
