As it turns out the ancient house called Pokoj, where they are to stay, is full of ghosts that the quartermaster's mistress and camp follower Drozde can see. Meanwhile, the lieutenant Klaes tries to figure out what secrets the villagers are hiding and what happened to the militia unit that was posted at Pokoj before his regiment arrived. An alarming discovery is made of an imminent calamity that will affect villagers and soldiers alike.
