Good (not fantastic) adaptation of the book. They changed a few things, but DID answer some questions I had after reading the book. As a new mother, I found the scenes with the baby very hard to watch! But I knew it was coming.

"When people have the freedom to choose, they choose wrong. Every single time." - the Chief Elder
“Things could change, Gabe," Jonas went on. "Things could be different. I don't know how, but there must be some way for things to be different. There could be colors. And grandparents," he added, staring through the dimness toward the ceiling of his sleepingroom. "And everybody would have the memories."
"You know the memories," he whispered, turning toward the crib.
Garbriel's breathing was even and deep. Jonas liked having him there, though he felt guilty about the secret. Each night he gave memories to Gabriel: memories of boat rides and picnics in the sun; memories of soft rainfall against windowpanes; memories of dancing barefoot on a damp lawn.
The newchild stirred slightly in his sleep. Jonas looked over at him.
"There could be love," Jonas whispered.”
― Lois Lowry, The Giver
When our people, they chose
to do away with all of them, color, race, religion, they created Sameness. If we were different, we could be envious, angry, or resentful, consumed with hatred. We need Sameness.
Giver: With love comes faith, with it comes hope.
Chief: Love is just passion
that can turn.
Giver: We can do better.
Chief: It turns into contempt and murder.
Giver: We could choose better.
Chief: People are weak. People are selfish. When people have the freedom to choose, they choose wrong. Every single time.
