(The ninth book in the Phryne Fisher series)

An excellent read.

Phryne is asked to investigate a mysterious death in a bookstore, for which the clearly blameless owner has been arrested. She becomes involved in the pre-war controversy of pursuing a Jewish Homeland, and I thereby learned a lot about an aspect of history I had missed. Phryne, with her quick wits and ability to charm the surliest scholar, absolves the bookseller and finds the true murderer.

I liked this book better than the TV version, though it was close. Here again, I enjoyed the more realistic approach to issues relevant to the time--relevant even now. More than anything, the book adds more to the story line, so one feels more immersed in the period. The characters are more "real" because much more is revealed about them in a book format where time and money is not the essence. The extra pages mean that they aren't just cardboard cut outs; they're more three dimensional. On TV they can be three dimensional in seconds depending on the skill of the actors.

Frankly, I was amazed at the amount of research (revealed by the extensive bibliography) that went into the writing of this book. I'm an AVID fan of Ms. Greenwood's Phryne Fisher character and therefore an avid fan of Ms. Greenwood. "They" fearlessly champion characters and causes that are relevant even today. I simply can't get enough!

Another adventure! The Jewish historical bent was interesting and informative. If you saw the TV show with the bookseller, you will really enjoy this story - it adds so much more to it. Kind of makes you want to go back and watch the TV shows over again, if you can stop focusing on the clothes.

Phryne and alchemy, young Jewish students and international plots. entertaining as always and lots of interesting info about the Jewish population in Australia between the wars.
