With a mesmerising first line, “It’s time I rose from the dead,” we are launched into new drama with beloved old characters. Gabriel, the erstwhile cranky land steward of Three Springs in Beckman, Lord of Sins, had been declared dead after attacks that left him with debilitating back pain. He was actually Marquess of Hesketh, but didn’t feel safe returning home. His brother Aaron seemed to benefit from his death when he took the title. There was also the small matter of Aaron marrying his fiancée, Marjorie. Artist Polonaise (Polly) Hunt shows up for commissioned portraits of Aaron and his wife when Gabriel makes his existence known. Memories of their sizzling encounters at Three Springs can’t be ignored. Polly resists more than a dalliance, fearing that her own secret past will be too much. Distancing herself is easier than drowning in the messiness of love -- or is it? Will Aaron and Marjorie learn to enjoy the relationship that had been forced on them? Marjorie’s mother believed being Marchioness was everything -- even when a different Marquess rises from the dead. Engaging spicy read peppered with humour.

I enjoyed the portrayal of Polonaise. Being a female artist during this time period would not have been easy, especially when also being a mother. Gabriel's support of her was heartwarming.

About the series: Having read some of the books of the Lonely Lords series and not in order, I'm starting from the beginning and the characters are easier to place. I actually recommend beginning with Darius.

What a disappointed this book was! Gabriel was introduced in Beckman's story and I adored him and though he was so interesting...but this story went nowhere and all the unique, compelling aspects of his character were drained off as the story progressed. I thought that his brother Aaron and his wife were more interesting than Gabriel and Polly ended up. Also, the resolution of Polly's conflict was silly. Her daughter comes off, frankly, like a brat, and the author does not explain how they are going to explain the circumstances of her daughter's birth. Lastly: I was annoyed that Polly and Sara never reconcile with their parents, whose greatest crime seems to have been naivete.

p 243 "We lose our children," Sara replied, smiling sadly. "If we're lucky, we lose them to a happy, meaningful adult life with families of their own."
