Transcendentalist-inspired Brook Farm was an 1840s agrarian, socialist, and utopian community in Massachusetts. Among its residents was Nathaniel Hawthorne, who fictionalized the society in The Blithedale Romance (1852). John Codman joined in 1843 at the age of twenty-seven.
