This is another fine (but subdued) recording by Bettye LaVette, who has been mining this stuff since at least 2007. Bettye was an up and coming soul/blues singer in the 60/70/80's who never got the recognition her talent deserved, and mothballed her career for decades. She came back on the scene in the early 2000's, and got her break with 2007's The Scene Of The Crime, and followed that up with 2010's Interpretations (which has the fabulous live version of 'Love Reign O'er Me' which she performed for the Who,whom were getting inducted in the Kennedy Centre Honours), and 2012's Thankful N' Thoughtful.
Bettye is an interpreter of other songwriters songs, and she knows how to pick them, and then she molds them to her style of singing that make them uniquely her own.
