Thanks to the recent film "Straight Outta Compton," Eric Wright, the diminutive, scowling rapper known as Eazy-E, has been back in the spotlight. If Dre was the sonic architect of N.W.A. and Cube was the lyrical master, Eazy was the public face of the group and is still one of the definitive gangsta rap figures. It's a mixed legacy as N.W.A., while rightly admired for the street anger they brought to rap, also embodied some of the genre's worst tendencies, namely misogyny, homophobia, and violence. They were something of the Sex Pistols of rap, a group too combustible and controversial to last very long, but incredibly influential all the same. This compilation focuses on Eazy's solo career, which began in 1988 with "Eazy-Duz-It," an album both Dre and Cube were involved in. You can appreciate Eazy's talent, while still being repulsed by some of the lyrics and sentiments (one song title: "I'd Rather F*** You"). There's a second disc of videos, both from N.W.A. and Eazy solo. He died unexpectedly in 1995 of AIDS.
