Offered in 0 more formatsAnnotation El Origen de los mexicanos, atribuida al jesuita mestizo Juan de Tovar (1540?-1626), es una obra que se inspira en un manuscrito azteca desconocido. Su autor fue prebendado de la Catedral de México, profesor del colegio de San Gregorio y apasionado investigador de las antigüedades indígenas. Tovar envió el Origen de los mexicanos al también jesuita José de Acosta, quien transcribió pasajes íntegros en su conocida Historia natural y moral de las Indias. El libro de Tovar resume los escritos de fray Diego Duran, quien a su vez siguió muy de cerca una historia redactada por un indígena en lengua náhuatl o azteca. Aquí se relata la historia de la conquista desde la óptica de los vencidos. Esta historia, fuente vital para el conocimiento del México prehispano, se conserva en un manuscrito, bautizado con el nombre de Ramírez en honor a su descubridor, junto con los fragmentos de otras dos relaciones no menos importantes.
