Actually, I really enjoyed watching this old, 'CLASSIC', TIMELESS, haunting tale, re-told with this new cast, in this modern day era (2015). I disagree, with the negative comments posted below and thought the settings/imagery, beautiful costumes and time period was well captured. Mia's acting was okay (better as the young, 'Alice') and good at points, while the other actors were appropriately chosen and well-served: including the shady, manipulative merchant, the wealthy/fun, huntsman, meek-housemaid and the sober yet busy Doctor. The movie was far from boring; and this haunting tale was revisited& revitalized, again, which I have heard about but not seen, nor read, over the long years. The ending was daunting and unexpected but completed well by her search. For those negative reviewers: A lot goes into making these types of 'classic', movies today, (and they are NOT easy to re-produce and act-out, by any means). I'm going to take it out again and watch this or the older version later.
Thx., for sharing those positive and insightful, posts here, online. :) . 2 Thumbs up.

Derisive comments might be on the mark, but my takeaway is how au courant MADAME BOVARY remains after more than 150 years. Yes, Mia Wasikowska's performance is spotty. She is excellent in scenes, and then she is lousy. But who can question Rhys Ifans performance as the unctuous merchant who gulls Emma? It is brilliant. All in all this film is a faithful adaptation of Flaubert's breakthrough novel. But it is not easy to watch because it so painful. If anything, Flaubert's novel is more brutal. All those 19th century adultery novels are painful: ANNA KARENINA, JUDE THE OBSCURE, EFFI BRIEST.

A somewhat tedious novel turned into a VERY tedious movie. Bad acting.

Can't add too much to what has already been commented on. Not as good as the book.

This is a 'based on' version that cherry-picks elements from Flaubert's novel, and it is a film to steer clear of. Mia Wasikowska did a nice job in 'Jane Eyre' but the most generous thing that can be said about her here is that she is miscast. Her lines are delivered as if she were in a high school play: the entire effect is painful. Henry Lloyd-Jones (from 'Indian Summers') underplays Charles Bovary - admittedly, a reasonably strategy - but Paul Giamatti can't seem to capture the village pharmacist Homais, the embodiment of the 'man of progress' that Flaubert detested . Emma's lovers add nothing much; indeed, the only actors in the film are Rhys Ifans as a wonderfully manipulative Lheureux, and Laura Carmichael (of 'Lady Edith' fame), who shines in her cameo role as Emma's housemaid. Apart from the costumes and setting, it would be far better to have another look at Claude Chabrol's 1991 version of the story, which has the incomparable Isabelle Huppert as our bored country housewife. As for this 'update', à éviter.

I like Mia Wasikowska so I decided to check out this version of Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary. It is the third version of Madame Bovary that I have seen this year, with one version being directed by Claude Chabrol (starring one of the greatest French actresses ever, Isabelle Huppert). All three versions were quite good, suggesting that the novel has so much merit that any decent presentation will hold interest.

yes, when movie makers don't even bother to ask actors to pronounce the name of the main character properly - such a movie is not worth watching.
French names are pronounced with the stress on the last syllable, always the last syllable.
If people don't bother even about such things it is a guarantee that the movie is a trash.

Great cast, well acted, though I must be getting to old for these kind of betrayal and revenge movies to enjoy them. Evil shop keeper lures and deceives gullible, just married young woman, into financial ruin and ultimately death. And then there is the adultery side of it, too sad for me.

Boring. Couldn't finish it. It's not the story that's boring, but the way it was done. It drag for me.

Emma expressed despair but found the wrong audience:

To maid: I imagined that this would be the happiest time in my life, but the calm here in which we live is not what I dreamt of. One after another, the days come, always the same, bringing nothing. Is this the will of God? Is my future just a dark corridor with a bolted door at the end?

To Le Marquis: Well, I realized that before getting married, I was contemplating my coming life like a child in a theater. Um, sitting there in-in high spirits, and eagerly waiting for the play to begin. It was a blessing in my early youth that I did not know what was really going to happen. When I look back now, it seems that I was like an innocent prisoner, condemned not to death but to life, and as yet unconscious of what the sentence meant. The longer I live, the more clearly I feel that on a whole...Life is a-a disappointment.
