A dark fable set five years after the end of the Spanish Civil War. Eleven-year-old Ofelia comes face to face with the horrors of fascism when she and her pregnant mother are uprooted to the countryside, where her new stepfather, a sadistic captain in General Franco's army, hunts down Republican guerrillas who refuse to give up the fight. The violent reality in which she lives merges seamlessly with a fantastical interior world when Ofelia meets a faun in a decaying labyrinth, and she is set on a strange mythic journey that is at once terrifying and beautiful.

Downright spooky and rather sad at times, but for the most part, a very moving film. Definitely not for everyone, but definitely for people who appreciate an artistic movie.

This film is a work of art. Yes, I know how pretentious that sounds, but this is the truth. You can pause any moment and it could be framed. Del Toro is master at engrossing the audience in beautiful, haunting imagery and effects. The story is so simple in theory but somehow the complexity and innocence of a small child in a fantastical world against the backdrop of war-torn Spain weaves a intricate and bewitching tale.

The DVD set I checked out, disc #1 did not display; disc #2 worked.

Well I got to watch the first hour of the movie and loved it. BUT the copy I got from the library was defective and would not play any further. I tried my DVD player and my X Box and both said the disk was damaged. SO WHY is it being checked out? and WHY did the person who checked it out before me fail to report that it was no longer useable !!!!! VERY DISAPPOINTED AND ANNOYED !

My take on this is it's a little girl's way to cope with the war in her land of make-believe. One thing to note is this is NOT a kids movie as there are a couple of gruesome moments.

It lives up to the hype! Watch it!!!

(By the way, it is subtitled. Much like the movie Hero, you don't care because the story is so compelling)

In both of the realms of either fantasy, as well as reality, Pan's Labyrinth certainly managed to excel and deliver some of the finest story-telling that I've had the pleasure of experiencing in a mighty long time.

Believe me, this was one unique WW2/Alice-In-Wonderland story like no other.

Bizarre, magical, cruel and treacherous, here director Guillermo Del Toro proves himself, beyond a doubt, to be a true master of his craft as he expertly intertwines 2 stories of quite opposing genres and, as a result, produces a beautifully realized film that's very worthy of all of its praise.

From its startling visual excellence, to its first-rate cast, to its heart-breaking story, to its exceptional soundtrack - Pan's Labyrinth triumphs on all of these levels, and beyond.

Here's a big-budget movie whose euro-dollars were very well spent, where its story was well thought out, and, thankfully, (because it wasn't a Hollywood production) this picture wasn't ruined by the over-bearing taint of that country's movie industry.

I give 3 big cheers to this film's 3 stand-out performances - Ivana Baquero (as Ofelia), Sergi Lopez (as Captain Vidal), and Maribel Verdu (as Mercedes).

Warning! - This film contains some very graphic and brutal violence! It has a "restricted" rating.

Pan: "A long time ago, in the underground realm, where there are no lies or pain, there lived a Princess who dreamed of the human world. She dreamed of blue skies, soft breezes, and sunshine. One day, eluding her keepers, the Princess escaped. Once outside, the brightness blinded her and erased every trace of the past from her memory. She forgot who she was and where she came from. Her body suffered cold, sickness, and pain. Eventually, she died. However, her father, the King, always knew that the Princess' soul would return, perhaps in another body, in another place, at another time. And he would wait for her, until he drew his last breath, until the world stopped turning..."

"Many, many years ago in a sad, faraway land, there was an enormous mountain made of rough, black stone. At sunset, on top of that mountain, a magic rose blossomed every night that made whoever plucked it immortal. But no one dared go near it because its thorns were full of poison. Men talked amongst themselves about their fear of death, and pain, but never about the promise of eternal life. And every day, the rose wilted, unable to bequeath its gift to anyone... forgotten and lost at the top of that cold, dark mountain, forever alone, until the end of time."
