What a complete waist of time...
0 stars... Terrible movie...
This is the original film by Michael Haneke, made in German ( he remade the same film in English- both are worth watching- though I prefer the original ). This is a disturbing film, not least for the way the director implicates the viewer in the savagery and cruelty seen onscreen.
I don't need to add anything to the raves below. Just want to add that at times, during the film, I found I was holding my breath. Michael Haneke is an excellent director and I plan on seeing his other films.
The movie was very enjoyable when the villains were on screen, but the middle section where they are gone is extremely boring. So boring in fact, that I skipped through it.
I recommend this, but don't let that middle section discourage you. Just skip it if you find it boring.
Identical remake of the 1997 German film of the same name.
Didn't like the original film, so no surprise that I didn't like the remake. However, the actors in the original film, especially the killers, put on better performances.
A few years ago i saw the English version and i thought it was pretty good. This one views much like the later made English one... however, and i think a few years of maturing may have had something to do with it.... but i got something completely different out of it. I believe (and if you have NOT seen this do not continue to read below this line
the point to this movie is the real horror isn't the mentally torturing minipulating pair of guys... the real monster during this film, is the viewer. If you've seen the film and didn't get that, watch it again with that in mind......
Demented, depressing, miserable, sad. The 1.5 stars are only for the acting, which is very good. If you enjoy watching what borders on a play, with little change of scenery, about two young men getting their kicks from murdering a family, then this is your movie! Otherwise, stay away.
Its a movie about how accepting the audience is about murder and violence. It shows how when you watch a Horror film like saw or hostel you are an accomplice and want the violence to happen. If your going to watch be prepared to be disturbed and I highly recommend to watch the directors interview to but the film into context.
Great performances by Ulrich Muhe(The Lives of Others) and his real-life wife Susanne Lothar(White Ribbon) turned this otherwise manipulative, disturbing film within film into reality. While Haneke made this terribly shocking film from the murderers's playful stand point, I, as an audience, watched and felt the terror through the eyes, body and soul of victims.
I had hope during this movie but the film's ending killed it.
