The indie boom of the 90s enabled voices that hadn't been heard much in cinema (women, minorities, gays and lesbians) to be heard and there was a wave of films by African-American filmmakers. Spike Lee was the most prominent (and controversial), but there were plenty of other noteworthy films from the period, many of them focused on the inner city, such as "Boyz 'N' the Hood," "Menace II Society," "Juice," and "Straight Out of Brooklyn." "Fresh" was the debut film of a white New Yorker, who nonetheless chose to focus on black characters. Sean Nelson gives an excellent performance as the lead character, a kid who gets mixed up with drug dealers. Giancarlo Esposito (Gus from "Breaking Bad") plays a bad dude, while Samuel L. Jackson is his mostly absent father. It's harrowing and unflinching and it's pity it's not a better known film today. The final shot, which reminded me of "The 400 Blows," is heartbreaking. Director Boaz Yakin also did "Remember the Titans" and "A Price Above Rubies."

Wonderful film about a young, street smart boy, struggling to fight his way through various adversities. To many he's a kid, but deep inside he's a step ahead and ready to show the adults in his life who's boss.
