"When journalist and author Alison Stewart was confronted with emptying her late parents' overloaded basement, a job that dragged on for months, it got her thinking: How did it come to this? Why do smart, successful people hold on to old Christmas bows, chipped knick-knacks, VHS tapes, and books they would likely never reread? Junk details Stewart's three-year investigation into America's stuff. She rides along with junk removal teams like Trash Daddy, Annie Haul, and Junk Vets. She goes backstage to a taping of Antiques Roadshow, and learns what makes for compelling junk-based television with the executive producer of Pawn Stars. And she even investigates the growing problem of space junk--23,000 pieces of manmade debris orbiting the planet at 17,500 MPH, threatening both satellites and human space exploration"--Provided by publisher.

Author investigated the psychology of why we hoard, junk removing business, how cute actual pack rat animal compared to regular rat, space junk, junk/antique/recycling tv shows to refurbishing item stores for budget minded consumers.
Good timely offbeat book.

An interesting book about accumulating stuff (junk), and how we feel about it, buy it, sell it, pawn it, appraise it, store it, hoard it, recycle it, shed tears over it, and throw it away. Makes you almost want to get up and start sorting out those old boxes in the basement...almost. Even a very enlightening chapter on problems with all the junk that is now orbiting Earth.

As an organizer and purger whose habits are really genetic, not virtues, I find this subject fascinating. Some people are compulsive and form relationships with stuff that they cannot break. The author examines the subject from a variety of interesting angles--most people will find some angles in this book of interest to them. Whether you hoard or are a minimalist, there will be something in this book that appeals to you and no doubt comforts you.
