From the Emmy, PEN, Peabody, Critics' Choice, and Golden Globe Award-winning creator of the TV show Fargo comes the thriller of the year.

On a foggy summer night, eleven people--ten privileged, one down-on-his-luck painter--depart Martha's Vineyard on a private jet headed for New York. Sixteen minutes later, the unthinkable happens: the plane plunges into the ocean. The only survivors are Scott Burroughs--the painter--and a four-year-old boy, who is now the last remaining member of an immensely wealthy and powerful media mogul's family.

With chapters weaving between the aftermath of the crash and the backstories of the passengers and crew members--including a Wall Street titan and his wife, a Texan-born party boy just in from London, a young woman questioning her path in life, and a career pilot--the mystery surrounding the tragedy heightens. As the passengers' intrigues unravel, odd coincidences point to a conspiracy. Was it merely by dumb chance that so many influential people perished? Or was something far more sinister at work? Events soon threaten to spiral out of control in an escalating storm of media outrage and accusations. And while Scott struggles to cope with fame that borders on notoriety, the authorities scramble to salvage the truth from the wreckage.

Amid pulse-quickening suspense, the fragile relationship between Scott and the young boy glows at the heart of this stunning novel, raising questions of fate, human nature, and the inextricable ties that bind us together.

This book started and ended well! The bulk of it was kind of pointless though, I feel like the author was just filling the pages.

A good, suspense filled read. Found myself wanted to get to the end to find the answer to the mystery.

This book was too slow and the plot was left wanting. I finished it, but it was a struggle. I kept thinking that the plot was going to get better but it never did. Not the worst book I've ever read, but far from good.

A true suspense guaranteed to leave you intrigued until the very end!

A private jet takes off from Martha's Vineyard for the New York City area with a family of four aboard, plus another couple, a security guard, a crew of three, and a forty-something painter who was invited along on a kindly impulse. Eighteen minutes later the plane has crashed into Long Island Sound, killing everybody on board except for the painter, Scott Burroughs, who swims through the night with the only other survivor, a four-year-old boy, on his back. This character-driven novel is part mystery, part thriller--but somehow it all fits. Just when you think you’re getting answers for the reason behind the crash, the author switches characters on you. Hawley proves to be a master of weaving together pieces of a puzzle that he’s already solved in a way that teases the reader, so putting down the book before the reader is satisfied is simply out of the question. I really enjoyed this book!

Interesting story with a very disappointing and cliched end. The structure, going back in time to give back stories, kept me going, but the writing was sometimes embarrassingly bad. Guess it's because he's mostly a script writer! I agree that it's overrated.

I was caught up in this book from beginning to end, and I love the unresolved ending. I kept getting visions of Fox News and Bill O’Reilly as I read about the abrasive news commentator Bill Cunningham. How a mysterious plane crash involving the head of a conservative TV news channel is used by Cunningham to increase his audience and the comeuppance he gets at the end by the lone adult survivor of the crash who points out on air how phones were illegally tapped to get information is great. I love books with clear heroes and villains.

I read that this book might become a movie. Better check it out now while you can. A great read, I highly recommend it.

Just finished this and loved it. I didn't want it to end but I really wanted to find out what or who was responsible for the airplane crash that only two people (a 50 year old artist and a 4 year old boy) walked (or swam) away from. Character driven story, not literary, but definitely not fluff - thoughtful, intelligent, engrossing. Loved this!

A well written thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat until the very last page. There were several characters that I loved as well as a couple that I loved to hate. Many interesting themes were discussed, but I especially liked the way that the author handled the parts of the plot that focused on the current trend of "infotainment".

What is she looking for, this woman? Is it merely a way out? A clear and sensible path to safety? Or has she lost something? Someone? In that moment, when gentle rocking turned into cannonball ricochet, did she go from wife and mother, from sister or girlfriend, from daughter or paramour to refugee? A fulfilled and happy we to a stunned and grieving I?
