In a world policed by telepaths, Ben Reich plans to commit a crime that hasn't been heard of in 70 years: murder. That's the only option left for Reich, whose company is losing a 10-year death struggle with rival DCourtney Enterprises. Terrorized in his dreams by The Man With No Face and driven to the edge after DCourtney refuses a merger offer, Reich murders his rival and bribes a high-ranking telepath to help him cover his tracks. But while police prefect Lincoln Powell knows Reich is guilty, his telepath's knowledge is a far cry from admissible evidence.

Classic murder mystery that happened to happen to be in science fiction with telepathic protagonist.
It is dated especially on the mainframe computer.

Futuristic novel about telepaths and normals, and one man's journey to commit murder. I found that the story was well-written, had good plot and character development. But the ending came abruptly and was not easy to comprehend in some aspects.

A rather neglected figure in sci-fi, Alfred Bester (1913-1987) was an influential and forward-thinking writer who merged the pulp of the genre with the more sinister and serious aspects of speculative fiction. This novel, which won the first Hugo, has elements (paranoia and madness, a future that is less sleek than drab, evil corporations) that would later surface in P.K. Dick's books. Also recommended, "The Stars My Destination."

How does a person get away with murder when the detective on the case is telepathic? The story is a thrilling cat and mouse chase and a fast read, but its age does show... I didn't even know JFK airport used to be called Idlewild.

In the endless universe there has been nothing new, nothing different. What has appeared exceptional to the minute mind of man has been inevitable to the infinite Eye of God. This strange second in a life, that unusual event, those remarkable coincidences of environment, opportunity, and encounter... all of them have been reproduced over and over on the planet of a sun whose galaxy revolves once in tow hundred million years and has revolved nine times already.
