I took this book out on a recomendation from the library, and I loved it. I think it was my first time reading about Soul Eaters as the supernatural creature and I thought they were fantastic and really well done.

Such a pretty cover for such an ugly message. The story started off interesting, quickly soured, and just never recovered. Very poor message for teen fiction. I don't recommend it.

Alys is a suspicious child as she is the only child found truly awake after all the adults in her village are found dead. As she grows older and discovers a power similar to the soul eaters that killed her village she works to keep it a secret in order to stay safe in the village that took her and the other children in. This is not a happy village, and Alys and the children from her village are not treated kindly. As Alys's power grows, she is forced to leave. Along the way, she must decide what this power means for her, and with the direction of The Beast will either save the world or help to end it.

At the beginning, the book was very instructing. However, as I kept reading and reading it became more and more boring and it got to the point that I stopped reading at all. Disappointed.

Probably one of my favorite dark fantasies so far this year! It has the feel of a fairy-tale like Hansel and Gretel (but darker, if possible) and is based on an obscure old nursery rhyme. "The Beast is an Animal, Hear it knock upon your door, It sucks your soul, then licks the bowl, And sniffs around for more..." Alys is a compelling heroine that you truly empathize with as the story progresses. I'll definitely be watching for more from this debut author!

On a scale of one to ten, I think the book stretched out a good plot of 7 or 8 out way too much so it became a 5 or 6. It seemed very sinister to me, but I don't know how much of the Welsh folktales were playing an effect here. It started off really odd, and ended really oddly. I didn't expect much from the book but was still a little lost on where the plot was going. The title, lastly, didn't seem to fit the book too well to be fair. But overall, I guess it may be some people's ideal read.

Alys is a young girl when she first meets the soul eaters. The soul eaters are 2 twin sisters set out to feed on human souls. Alys first meets them and she feels electrified by them. Alys and all the children in her village were spared by the twins, but having lost their parents and elders the children were sent to live in a neighbouring village. Alys soon feels different and realizes that she might be a soul eater too, but she has to keep it a secret before anyone in the village finds out and executes her. Not that bad of a book, it was interesting and a bit thrilling. I enjoyed it and it was fascinating seeing Alys growing up over the years in the book, and how her perspective changes over time. 4.5/5 stars.

This dark fairy tale held me captive. I finished it in less than a day.

When a superstitious village banishes twin sisters and their mother, bitterness and rage harden the girls’ hearts and they become soul eaters, which is exactly what it sounds like. This book is full of witch panic and evocative language, and the setting takes inspiration from Wales.

If you're a fan of gothic fiction and bleak, moody atmosphere, this is the story for you. Also, it is a stand-alone novel so you don't have to worry about those pesky cliffhangers!
