Fascinating tale of the construction of the Eiffel Tower and forbidden love.
A great historical novel set in Paris in the 1880's, as well as a fine love story. I always enjoy reading about social mores from another time - and how sad living up to the expectations of others can make us.
Historical fiction that is based on real people can sometimes be frustrating for me, as it at times feels like the author is reduced to simply listing the events in the real figures' lives rather than telling a proper story; however, this was good! It helped that I'd never heard of the people involved and knew next-to-nothing about the construction of the Eiffel Tower before reading this book. This is romantic and unhurried, and Paris is a character in and of itself (as it should be). I read this a couple of months ago, pre-release, and I can't say it's stuck in my mind as a particularly memorable read, but it's still an enjoyable one.
